My name is Rob Lawson and I’m a carpenter and joiner based on the Isle of Wight. I decided to set up Woodgrain Workshop because I am absolutely passionate about getting the most out of the wood used in joinery. I feel that timber from reclaimed sources is too often overlooked as a joinery material. Introducing reclaimed timber to joinery adds qualities to designs in both period and contemporary setting that cannot be achieved using newly sourced stock.

Reclaimed wood, especially mahogany, oak and certain varieties of pine, has a natural colour and grain authenticity that cannot be mimicked using stains and other finishes on young timber. Furthermore, reclaimed wood has a unique density that can only be achieved with ageing, not only making it exceptionally beautiful but also very hard and stable.

Not all types of joinery work can be done with reclaimed timber and in many environments it isn’t suitable, but used carefully and if necessary in combination with young timber, it creates a uniquely beautiful finish that everybody notices.

Woodgrain Workshop offers woodworking services as a carpenter and joiner for Newport and the rest of the Isle of Wight. Being a small business it carries few overheads and can therefore show flexibility and value that would challenge larger joinery businesses.

If you would like to see what can be done, with wood sourced from both new and reclaimed stock, then visit the Gallery section of the site to see examples of Woodgrain Workshop’s creations.
