Flooring is the most common use for reclaimed timber. Indeed, high proportions of reclaimed stock originate from floors in period houses. While solid wood floors laid with new wood use a broad range of wood varieties (oak, walnut, maple, cherry, beech etc) reclaimed flooring in the UK is almost always oak or pine. The softness of pine ceases to be an issue in reclaimed flooring as the pine has had so long to fully season, indeed old pine is often harder than young hardwood. The example photographed on this page is antique pitch pine milled from old factory roof timbers. This wood has an amazing grain variety and colour and is denser than seasoned oak.

The obvious benefit of installing a reclaimed wooden floor is aesthetic but a further hidden benefit lies in the lack of shrinkage.  So long as the wood is allowed to acclimatise in its host environment to remove any atmospheric moisture content then once it is installed the floor will be very stable and hard.

Woodgrain Workshop is able to install new or reclaimed solid wood floors. If the format of the space requires it (L shaped space with two principle lengths) then a butt joint can be used to allow the wood to run in both directions (see images). Floors are sanded and sealed  with Osmo Polyx-oil. This German oil wax hybrid nourishes the wood and creates a completely watertight seal. Furthermore, if an area of the floor is damaged then it can be sanded and retreated with Osmo without having to strip and re treat the entire floor.

Woodgrain Workshop offers woodworking services as a joiner for Newport and the rest of the Isle of Wight. Being a small business, it carries few overheads and therefore offers extremely competitive pricing that represents great value for money.
